

While quantum technologies have the potential to strengthen national security and transform U.S. industries, a wide gap persists between rapid theoretical breakthroughs and the practical realities of implementation. Many promising technologies remain confined to the laboratory, and the workforce needed to bring them to market remains limited.
The NSF Quantum Technologies Engine in Connecticut, led by the University of Connecticut, is accelerating the commercialization of quantum technologies for three key industries – national defense, biotechnology, and finance services – through applied research, translation support, and industry collaboration.
Connecticut combines world-class research universities with a concentration of industries positioned to be among the earliest adopters of these technologies. Backed by a $121 million state commitment, the NSF Engine is advancing quantum sensing, secured communications, computing, and materials through a shared testbed, deep-tech incubator, and translation pathways. Through deep collaborations across the ecosystem, the NSF Quantum Technologies Engine is also creating durable career pathways with multiple entry points and clear routes to jobs in quantum, AI, and the broader advanced technology economy.
