
Under the leadership of CEO Meera Sampath and Principal Investigator and Nobel Laureate Stanley Whittingham, the NSF Engine drives significant advancements in battery technology, driving domestic self-sufficiency and global competitiveness in a clean energy economy.
In response to the urgent need for increased battery production and storage capacity in a number of critical industries including electric vehicles and renewable grid storage, the NSF Engine connects leading research institutions with established and emerging companies to accelerate battery technology development and manufacturing innovation. By leveraging Upstate New York’s R&D ecosystem and testbed infrastructure, the initiative addresses gaps in the battery supply chain, bolsters national and economic security, and supports carbon neutrality goals.
The Engines core partners include Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Syracuse University, NY-BEST and Launch NY. Combined with complementary investments from the US Economic Development Agency and the State of NY for Battery-NY, a next-gen development and prototyping facility that make Upstate NY a one-stop shop for all of the battery industry’s needs, the Engine aspires to make Upstate New York is indeed well positioned to become “The Battery Capital” of the United States.
