NSF Engine Spotlight: ASCEND Engine

Advancing Climate Innovation

The Colorado-Wyoming Climate Resilience Engine (CO-WY), led by Innosphere Ventures in Fort Collins, CO, aims to revolutionize climate technology, spanning from environmental monitoring to predictive analytics. Its mission is to empower communities, governments, and industries to effectively navigate and adapt to the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change.

The CO-WY Engine brings together a diverse coalition including universities, federal labs, research organizations, venture capital firms, public entities, and industry partners unified in their commitment to serve the entire states of Colorado and Wyoming. Leveraging their robust startup ecosystems and research capacity, CO-WY will tackle critical challenges such as methane emissions, soil carbon capture, earth sensing, water scarcity, wildfires, and extreme weather.

Led by Principal Investigator Mike Freeman and Co-Principal Investigators Tim Jones, Parag Chitnis, Christa Johnson, Bryn Rees and Cass Moseley, the CO-WY Engine is catalyzing a Climate Economy locally and nationally by:

  1. Identifying climate challenges, including needs in measurements, standardization, and barriers to equitable technology adoption and implementation
  2. Funding and providing strategic partnering for selected technologies developed through use-inspired and translational research
  3. Implementing new workforce programs tailored to regional needs

This strategic approach positions the CO-WY Engine to profoundly influence our understanding, prediction and mitigation of climate change impacts. It also aims to drive workforce development and community engagement, emphasizing inclusive growth to ensure that these economic benefits reach across diverse communities.

Over the next decade, the CO-WY Engine projects significant outcomes:

  • Creation of 22,000 jobs
  • $1.5 billion growth in gross domestic product
  • Training of over 5,000 individuals for the workforce
  • Securing $79M in grant funds from a total of 210 R&D translational grants

This ambitious vision underscores CO-WY’s commitment to advancing climate resilience while fostering economic prosperity and equity. For more details, visit https://co-wyengine.org/, watch the kickoff video and follow on Linkedin.
