NSF Engine Spotlight: Future Use of Energy in Louisiana (FUEL) Engine

The Louisiana Energy Transition Engine, also known as Future Use of Energy in Louisiana (FUEL), is a pioneering initiative led by the esteemed Louisiana State University (LSU). This initiative is positioning the state as a global leader in energy expansion and carbon management.

FUEL brings together over 50 partners across academia, industry, government, and community sectors to manage carbon emissions and advance cutting-edge energy technologies.

As a hub for talent and technology development, FUEL leverages Louisiana’s unique infrastructure, geology, and human capital to support the global shift toward innovative energy solutions. With strong ties to the hydrocarbon industry and expertise in carbon management, hydrogen economy, and sustainable manufacturing, the NSF Engine is working to transform Louisiana into a global leader in carbon management and energy expansion.

Core Objectives:

  • Use-Inspired Research and Development: FUEL drives collaboration between industry and academia to develop carbon management innovations that meet both local and global needs.
  • Workforce Development: FUEL is building a workforce through technical training and advanced education opportunities, particularly for communities that have historically been underrepresented and underrepresented in economic benefits, to support the energy expansion opportunities.
  • Technology Commercialization: FUEL translates research into commercial solutions, advancing carbon management and increasing energy production through entrepreneurship and innovation in areas such as utilizing carbon in products and sustainable water management.

Led by CEO and Executive Director Michael S. Mazzola, the Louisiana Energy Transition Engine is addressing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy solutions. Through research, workforce development, and commercialization, the NSF Engine is driving carbon management and economic growth in the state’s energy sector.
